In the 1560s the Augustinians entered the valley of the Matlatzincas to found their monastery of the Divine Lord (El Divino Señor). The valley, controlled by the Aztecs, was and is dominated by the rock-cut temples on the cliffs above the town. The large and beautiful monastic complex still remains the center of the town.
